Keeladi Excavation

Last summer, when in Madurai, we heard about the excavation in Keeladi which was causing ripples to be a Sangam age city site, excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Just when we were pondering whether it will be possible to see the excavation site, we heard that the DHAN foundation in Madurai, has trips arranged for students and general public interested to learn more about the finding, while the excavation was still underway. The trip was fully guided and informational. The lead archaeologist at that time, professors and experts were also present at the site, to answer questions and provide information.

Keeladi is 12 kms from Madurai in Sivagangai district, south of Vaigai river. The archeologist heading the dig, said that, since it is very hard to find sites to excavate within Madurai, the ASI has been looking on either banks of Vaigai river, through its course, in hopes of finding clues about cities that thrived near Madurai during the Sangam age. Of many sites that they had assessed and dug they have been very lucky in finding this flourishing city that they currently guess through comparative testing that it could be around 3rd century BC, which puts it on Sangam age Pandyan rule timeline. If the carbon dating testing confirms this, it is a pretty exciting find for history enthusiasts and common folk alike.

I really appreciate the ardor shown by K.P.Bharathi, adviser tourism development at Dhan Foundation, Madurai who arranged this whole trip and seems to be doing much more for local tourism and protection of historical sites, through the foundation.

Details of the dig and the current developments timeline of the excavation has been reported and documented in the newspaper, 'The Hindu' here.

Ornate Potware and bone writing tool

Decorated shell bracelet, Chess pieces, Ivory dice

They have found more than three thousand artifacts made of stone, terracotta, iron, ivory and bone. Numerous jewelry beads made of terracotta, agate, coral, marble, glass and gold have been found, as well as, decorative bangles and terracotta and ivory earrings.

Writing tools, weapons and game pieces have been found. Pandyan age coins and Roman coins, slabs have been found proving trade relations between them. Sophisticated, ornate pots have been found. Mud pots with Tamil Brahmi inscriptions of names of owners have been found. Tamil, Prakrit, Sanskrit names among them, indicate contacts with other people.

The brick buildings are the highlights of this find, the experts say. There are square and rectangular structures (tubs) made with with brick floors. There are long walls made of bricks also, along these tubs with path ways to walk on them. They have found holes next to these which may have been used to erect poles to build wooden roof structures and they have found brick tiles used to build roofs. These brick roof tiles have holes for iron nails used to hammer them in place. They have also found water canals made with bricks and ring wells near them.

The entire expedition ended with refreshing 'Kambu Koozh' (Pearl millet porridge) served by the local women's club. Yum!

For me, it really was an amazing experience to walk through the ruins of a possible Sangam age city, in its original location, so close to Madurai. It would have been great if they were able to keep the excavated site preserved in its original location. But since it is in a private land, they had to close it and all the artifacts have been moved for further research and preservation in a museum.

Ponniyin Selvan - Stage Act by Magic Lantern

'Ponniyin Selvan' by Kalki, a historical fiction in Tamil, is a famous, loved book.

I read it when I was on vacation after my 12th standard exams. I read all the huge 5 parts of the book within 10 days, I think, or could have been a little less or more than that. Well, a teenager on vacation, with nothing else to do, can accomplish that I think. I don't know. My memories are hazy now. It's hard to believe that I had so much time in hand to finish the books in such short period of time. I know I was obsessed, because my nights were haunted by the characters.

It is one of the books that I want to re-read in my adulthood but have not gotten around to it, not completely.

When I was in Madurai for a short visit this year, I had the chance to watch the stage performance of the book, performed by Magic Lantern at the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall, arranged by Rotary Club of Madurai, as a fund raising event. It's a four hour event with a 15 mins break in between.

There was music, singing and dancing. The sound, mic and lighting setup were all done expertly. The music, art and costume design, dance and stunt choreography were all creative and aesthetic. The artists were brilliant, I thought, with proficiency in Tamil, stage presence and command of their character. The funny, adventurous and trouble seeking Vandiyathevan, the shrewd spy Azhwarkadiyan Nambi, the quirky and brave Poonkuzhali, the beautiful and smart princess Kundavai, the remorseful and love struck prince Aditya Karikalan, the mysterious Nandhini - all came alive through their performances. They all captured the essence of the characters in the book.

I thought they had done a pretty good job in condensing the huge book with so many characters and events into a single stage performance. Still four hours couldn't contain all the major events in the book. Parts that happen in Sri Lanka including the ones in Buddhist Monastery were omitted and few more.

I am not sure if it will delight people who have not read the book though. It might be hard to grasp the many different twists and turns in the story without the knowledge of the book. And a certain mystery element that hangs in the book is also lost on stage, as characters have to narrate the events in many cases, but music and the lighting setup make up for it, where possible.

Bharathiyar - 2

He has written about a host of different things with so much passion. I like his poems which were a rally cry for nation-building, self reliance and building an equitable society. I like how progressive some of his ideas were and I am drawn to the invigorating intensity in his words. In a prejudiced, apathetic society, Bharathiyar screamed loud through his written words.

I find it contradictory that with such social and economic free thinking ideas, he was also religious and wrote a whole array of devotional hymns.

I have been reading few of his poems. I have quoted one of my favorites before, here. Few more lines I like:

பாரத ஜனங்களின் தற்கால நிலைமை:

நெஞ்சு பொறுக்கு திலையே - இந்த
நிலை கெட்ட மனிதரை நினைத்துவிட்டால்,
அஞ்சி யஞ்சி சாவார் - இவர் அஞ்சாத பொருளில்லை அவனியிலே;
மரத்தில் என்பார்; அந்தக் குளத்தில் என்பார்;
துயரப்படுவார்; எண்ணி பயப்படுவார்;

....

தமிழ் மொழியில் இயற்றல் வேண்டும்;
சொல்வதிலோர் மகிமை இல்லை;

Tamil Concert - 'Geetanjali'

Geetanjali is non-profit Tamil music band that performs yearly for ASHA's cause in the Seattle area. I find it to be great way to entertain and also raise money for a good cause. This is my third year attending their concert and this time I was completely blown away with the way the event was organized and executed. Hats off to the Geetanjali orchestra, ASHA team and all the volunteers. And boy, was it entertaining. The singers were all so brilliant and the band amazing! They also had a kids orchestra, playing instruments like - violins, saxophone and guitar. It was so wonderful to see and hear the young talent.

I have concluded that I am a great fan of live performances.
